What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects people’s behaviour. People with ADHD can seem restless, may have trouble concentrating and may act on impulse.

Symptoms of ADHD are often noticed earlier in life.  However, many adults will be diagnosed in later life. There are many strengths and challenges associated with peoples’ experiences of ADHD.

 

Symptoms of ADHD

The symptoms of ADHD can be categorised into two types of behavioural problems – inattentiveness (including difficulty concentrating and focusing) and hyperactivity.

The main symptoms include:

Poor organisational skills

Inability to focus or prioritise

Carelessness and lack of attention to detail

Continually starting new tasks before finishing old ones

Continually losing or misplacing things

Forgetfulness

Restlessness

Difficulty keeping quiet and often speaking out of turn / interrupting others

Mood swings and irritability

Inability to deal with stress

Extreme impatience

Taking risks in activities, with little or no regard for personal safety or the safety of others – for example, driving dangerously
