Family Therapy in York, Manchester & online

What is Family Therapy?

All families face challenges at times which can be difficult to discuss openly, and this is normal.

Family therapy is a longer-term form of therapy which may involve a family member discussing feelings and issues together in a safe space, with the support of a therapist.

The term ‘family’ in family therapy is defined as a group of people who care about each other and call each other their family. This can include parents, children, grandparents, partners or extended relatives, or caregivers, friends or professionals who are part of the group.

This form of therapy can be useful in all areas of life in which your child or young person may be struggling.

What do we use Family Therapy for?

Family Therapy offers your family the opportunity to discuss their difficulties and work together to find new solutions, helping you to explore new ideas within your family relationships.

The goal of family therapy is to help members understand each other and work through their emotions in a safe space. Family therapy can help your child or young person express difficult thoughts and feelings in a supportive environment, making them feel more manageable over time.

Research has shown that family therapy is very useful for children and young adults who experience a very wide range of difficulties, including mental illness, physical illness, bereavement and eating disorders.

This type of therapy focuses on improving the communication and relations between family members. Family therapists will not look to blame anyone, and work with families to understand problems in the context in which they occur. When each member of the family feels they have the support they need and works to their strengths, it has a positive impact in family relationships and in members lives as a result.

What is a Family Therapy session like?

During family therapy sessions, our supportive therapists will act as facilitators, following the happenings of the session and staying in touch with them. Our family therapists can be emotive and are skilled in working with a range of responses.  The supportive role of the therapist will help your family relate to each other in a more positive way.

We have a team of professional and friendly child therapists who can work together with you and your child to design a bespoke and flexible treatment which works best for them.
