Counselling & Psychological Therapy for Children in York, Manchester & online
What is Counselling & Psychological Therapy?
Being a parent or carer is hard, and at times it can feel overwhelming. All you want is for your child or young person to thrive and be happy, so it can be difficult to see them struggle. Counselling is an open and flexible talking style therapy, providing a safe, confidential space for your child or young person to talk to an impartial, trained therapist about their concerns.
Counselling can help your child feel listened to and understood, and our therapists can support your child in sharing their feelings and understanding their thoughts, feeling and behaviours – assisting their self-knowledge, emotional acceptance, and growth.
Psychological therapy is a longer-term, more in-depth talking therapy, which facilitates long term changes in your child. Your child will be encouraged and empowered to find their own strategies to cope and will be supported throughout as they put these changes into practice.
What do we use Counselling & Psychological Therapy for?
Counselling can help your child feel listened to and understood, helping them to understand their problems and empowering them to make healthy decisions.
Counselling is a space for your child or young person to talk to us about how they are feeling without the fear of judgement or pressure from their home and school life. It provides a safe space for your child or young person to express their feelings and understand why they may feel this way.
Psychological therapy is useful for children when psychological or emotional difficulties have been going on for some time and is a good option when it feels difficult to understand your child’s difficulties.
Both counselling and psychological therapy can help with a range of mental health and neurodivergent conditions your child may be facing, including Anxiety, depression, ADHD, Autism, OCD, PTSD, and a wide range of behavioural issues.
What is a Counselling & Psychological Therapy session like?
There are many different types of counselling and psychotherapy which we can offer to your child, but our aim is to find the type which is the best for them, based on their wants and needs.
During counselling sessions, your child will have the opportunity to talk about how they feel in an environment which is confidential, impartial, and non-judgemental. Our expert counsellors can offer your child information and suggest ways of managing their thoughts, facing their fears and help them to find the best way for them to cope with what they are going through.
Psychological therapy sometimes references early life experiences which may link with your child’s current difficulties. Particular attention is paid to relationships, including the relationship formed between your child and their therapist.
In both counselling and psychological therapy, our mental health professionals will support your child both within, and outside of the therapy sessions.
We understand seeking therapy can be daunting for both you and your child and that taking the first step can be hard. We have a team of professional and friendly child therapists who can work together with you and your child to design a bespoke and flexible treatment which works best for them. Our children’s therapy services are available for children and teenagers aged 5 to 17, at our clinics in York, Manchester and online.
