Free Online Parenting Workshop – Introduction to supporting your child’s anxiety

NEW DATES ADDED

The number of children and young people experiencing anxiety in the UK has increased over the last couple of years. It is a common emotional difficulty that can impact all areas of life, including homelife and school.

Parenting a child who feels high levels of anxiety or is ‘worrier’ can be hard and it can be difficult to know how best to respond.

Whilst unfortunately there are no ‘magic solutions’, deepening your understanding of anxiety, and support strategies that you can implement at home, can be hugely helpful.

What will be covered in the workshop?

Join two of our experienced child and young people therapists, for a free one-hour introductory workshop on understanding anxiety, how it can present in children and young people, and practical ways you can support your child.

At The Retreat Clinics, we are passionate about supporting young people and families to achieve their full potential and be mentally healthy.

Our partnership with the Ebor Academy Trust

We are delighted to be partnered with the Ebor Academy Trust, who run 23 schools across the region, supporting their wellbeing initiatives. The partnership will provide mental health support to the Academy through a bespoke series of training and workshops delivered our team of professionals who specialise in children and young people’s mental health.

We were pleased with the outcome of the first session of our Training Programme which began last week with a Wellbeing Leads workshop. The day provided an opportunity for wellbeing leads from the Academy to reflect on the challenges of their role and articulate what support they might need, develop their therapeutic communication skills with children’s and young people, and develop their knowledge of working with trauma in the classroom. It was great to receive such positive feedback from the staff at the Ebor Academy after the day:

“Really enjoyed it, it will make a difference to our children.”

“All people working with children would benefit from this training”.

“What an amazing place.”

At The Retreat Clinics, we can deliver a wide range of training and workshops for school staff across the education system. All of our training and support programmes are bespoke, tailored to the needs of any school community, and can be delivered in person or online.

Parent-child therapy services begin at The Retreat Clinics

A new service which helps parents understand and support their children with a host of new techniques, has begun at The Retreat in York.

Understanding how to respond to children and address their needs is often challenging for parents, says The Retreat. There may be times when you just don’t know how to deal with a situation or talk to your children about something.

Child-parent therapists work with parents and children together, supporting them to know what to expect at each stage of their child’s development

Using activities to practice specific techniques, experts can help parents overcome difficult situations and confrontations, avoid stressful situations and have a more intimate bond with their child.

The Retreat’s parent-child therapy uses a number of special techniques, working with highly qualified therapists.

One technique, explains Jennifer Bailey, Clinical Lead and Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist, involves ‘Reflective Functioning’: “This is a way in which we can really support a parent’s ability to understand and engage with their child in very difficult situations. It’s the ability to imagine mental states in ourselves and others. Once we can understand this, we can really improve your relationship with your child.”

Reflective Functioning is the ability to imagine mental states in ourselves and others. Once we can reflect, we can understand our own behaviour and responses, the behaviour and responses of others, and how these interact and intertwine. We begin to understand the behaviour of children and their internal mental state. Once we can understand this, we can improve your relationship with your child.

The Retreat’s parent-child therapy is helping parents to:

Another useful technique used in parent-child therapy is guided observation questioning, known as Behaviour, Meaning, Feeling.

This technique involves watching your child and really noticing every tiny thing they do, moment to moment and examining what their behaviour means and what they are trying to communicate. Our therapists will guide you through this and help you recognise key behaviours in your child and what they mean.

The Retreat’s child-parent therapy sessions

Child-parent therapists work with you and your child together, supporting you to become an expert in your child’s overall development. We will support you to know what to expect from your child at each stage of their development

Using activities to practice specific techniques, we can help you overcome difficult situations and confrontations, avoid stressful situations and have a more intimate bond with your child.

The Retreat gains national recognition for high quality therapy

The Retreat has a history of delivering innovative, compassionate mental healthcare. However, despite our 229-year (and counting!) legacy, we are never content to rest on reputation alone – we continuously look for ways to improve our service.

We are delighted to announce we have received official recognition from the Accreditation Programme for Psychological Therapies Services (APPTS). The programme was co-created by The Royal College of Psychiatrists and The British Psychological Society, providing a benchmark for high quality therapy services in the UK. The Quality Standards are aligned with the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) Key Lines of Enquiry and reflect current research and best practice guidelines. To achieve accreditation, we were required to demonstrate – through a rigorous external process – that we are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led, meeting 76 quality standards. The review included feedback from those using our services, therapists, service leads and professionals from external mental health services.

What does this mean for The Retreat?

The APPTS provides an impartial, third-party evaluation of our service which we welcomed. Our Adult Psychological Therapies Service met the challenge, to reaffirm our status as one of Yorkshire’s most trusted providers and mental health champions.

The award is a badge of honour for us and our staff, testament to the work that they do. We’re incredibly proud of our team, even more so as we were awarded the accreditation on our very first application. A huge thank you to all our staff, our Experts by Experiences, and our Board of Trustees for their valued contributions.

As always, we deliver our services with a strong foundation of Quaker values, through compassion, collaboration and community building. We are passionate about helping people, giving them hope, and building resilience: our award status is proof of our ongoing commitment to providing best-in-class psychotherapy services.

What does it mean for you?

If you are considering talking to someone about your experiences, perhaps for the first time, or if you are currently in therapy, you need to know that the person with whom you are working can be trusted, that they can walk with you on your journey and – ultimately – help you to move forward. In short, accreditation means that you don’t have to take our word for it. It illustrates we have done the work; we have the evidence to back it up, and we measure up to the highest national standards.

We have cause to celebrate, yet this award is not solely for us – it’s for you, to see and to know that we can offer evidence-based, effective and high-quality psychotherapy to support your mental health.

We’re here for you.

Music Therapy available at The Retreat at Charles Court

Welcome to George Murray, our new Music Therapist who joins our Children and Young People’s Team here at The Retreat Clinics.

He joins our growing team of specialists who are now based at ‘The Retreat at Charles Court’ in Strensall, in our brand-new facility.

George has worked as a Music Therapist for the last 18 years since qualifying in 2003 from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. George has extensive experience working with children and adults with learning disabilities, mental health problems, ASD, communication difficulties, emotional and behavioural problems, life-limiting conditions, dementia and trauma. He has worked a lot with people who are bereaved and people with caring responsibilities, as well as having a specialism in working with children with developmental trauma and attachment difficulties post-adoption. George also has extensive teaching and supervision experience in these areas.

Music Therapy uses psychotherapy theory and neuro-developmental models, and is based around the development of a relationship between therapist and client. Music Therapy is an exploratory and creative form of psychological support, and it is client-led. In addition to words, music can provide an alternative mode of communication, which is sometimes more accessible than words for some people. Through expressing themselves using words, music and play, clients can develop their social, emotional and communication skills, explore important personal themes and gain insight into their patterns of behaving.

George’s work with children is creative, play-based and child-led, and involves a lot of playful explorative interactions using a powerful combination of words, music, storytelling, drawing, chatting and playing together.

George is registered and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council. He is a member of the British Association for Music Therapy.

George plays the trombone and piano in a number of different ensembles, and when not involved in music can often be found cooking or swimming.
