Couples Therapy for Neurodiverse Relationships

Intimate relationships can be challenging for us all, and differences between partners can be difficult as well as exciting and enriching. When one or both/all partners are neurodivergent this can mean there are noticeable differences in the way each person responds to situations.

These differences can bring new perspectives but can also be difficult for the other to understand and adapt to. Being aware of the potential difficulties can support people to manage their relationship/s and, with awareness, introduce positive intervention to maintain connectivity.

Having both an understanding of difference and the ability to make adaptations will support a healthier relationship going forward.

Common challenges couples have where one or both are neurodivergent (ND) are:

  • Different ways of processing information can lead to misunderstandings and emotional outbursts or overwhelm, on both sides.
  • Each partner might have very different perspectives on solutions or choices, especially where changes in plans, routines or behaviours are needed.
  • Partners may naturally communicate in very different ways, which can lead to communication stress and feelings of guilt, blame and responsibility.
  • A lack of understanding about neurodiversity and previous experiences of prejudice and stigma can mean trust takes a long time to develop.

If couples/throuples cannot understand each other then the relationship/s will be problematic.

The Retreat Clinics can offer neurodivergent informed relationship therapy to help you and your partner/s make sense of your differences and respectfully work with them.

Working with the strengths and limitations of each partner/s can help build a stronger and more rewarding relational bond. Click here to find out more about how relationship therapy can support you and your partner/s.
